VisitAbility...it’s a funny word and the first time I heard it I thought someone had made a mistake. It wasn’t, it’s actually a concept of designing and building homes for basic accessibility.

VisitAble homes provide easy access on the main level for everyone. There are three components that are required:

  1. A no-step entrance
  2. Wider doorways and clear passageways on main floor and
  3. A main floor accessible bathroom.

VisitAble housing offers a convenient home for residents and a welcoming environment for visitors of all ages and mobility. When we bought and renovated our newest home, it only made sense to have it ‘VisitAble’. Adopting this as a minimum requirement for our homes ensures that everyone has access. Cities across Canada are catching on and the City of Ottawa now requires that any new affordable housing be built to VisitAble standards.
